The Ecommerce Checklist Most Stores Discover Too Late

Launching a store is easy. Launching one that people trust enough to enter card details into is a different exercise entirely.

The gap between a store that takes orders and a store that merely displays products is made of details — most of them small, most of them invisible until you go looking.

Trust is the first conversion problem

A stranger is about to hand you money and personal data. Everything that makes you look like a real, reachable business is doing conversion work.

  • A physical address and a working phone number, visible without hunting
  • Clear return, refund, and shipping policies written in plain language
  • Real photography of real products, from several angles
  • Visible payment security indicators and a valid HTTPS certificate
  • Genuine reviews, including the middling ones — uniformly perfect ratings read as fake

Checkout: remove, do not add

Every additional field, step, and decision loses a percentage of buyers. The single highest-impact change in most stores is offering guest checkout, because forcing account creation at the moment of payment is the most reliable way to lose a sale you had already won.

  1. 1Offer guest checkout, prominently.
  2. 2Show the total cost — including shipping and tax — before the final step, never as a surprise.
  3. 3Ask only for fields you will genuinely use.
  4. 4Support the payment methods your customers actually use, not just the ones easiest to integrate.
  5. 5Keep a persistent, visible cart summary so nobody has to remember what they are buying.

Product pages do the selling

The specification list is table stakes. What converts is answering the question the customer is quietly asking: will this work for me specifically? Sizing guidance, materials, dimensions against a familiar object, what is in the box, and how long delivery actually takes.

Mobile is not the secondary case

Most of your traffic and an increasing share of your orders are on a phone, frequently on a mediocre connection. Test the full path — browse, add, checkout, pay — on a mid-range device on mobile data. Not on your laptop at a desk.

“Every second of load time and every extra form field is a tax you pay on every single order, forever.”

The part everyone forgets: after the purchase

Order confirmation, dispatch notification, tracking, and a straightforward returns process are not admin — they determine whether a first-time buyer becomes a repeat one. The cheapest revenue you will ever earn comes from someone who has already bought once.

TIP

Place a real order on your own store using a real payment method, on your phone, and note every moment of hesitation. Those moments are your prioritised fix list.
